Can anyone give me some good advice as to wether I should purchase an online complete split system by goodman? I live in Southern Ga, my current system is pretty much dead and repairs to me warrants replacement. I am a big DIY person and I feel that this should be fairly easy to do.
Currently I am looking at a 13/14 seer rated and 3ton system. A couple of concerns that I have are...
1. Is this a good system and does Goodman stand behind there warranty?
2. Will I get everything that I need to install myself, minus a professional charging the system?
3. Will a local HVAC technician service this unit after I have installed it?
Any suggestions/advice would be much apreciated.
Thank You

1. What warranty? Most don't offer warranties for 'self installed' units.
2. Except the appropriate lengths and sizes of copper tubing to join the two, plus any electrical/ducting needed.
3. Probably, but see #1
A package unit is much easier and closer to a DIY install, there's no 'assembly' to speak of, just hook up the electrical and ductwork. Still a good idea to have it checked before putting it into service.
And of course, mechanical work almost always requires a permit and inspection.

zero warranty. period.
internet dealers lie. they just want to move another piece of equipment.
Goodman is about as cheap as you can get. good luck.......you'll need it. but you won't have any warranty.
Goodman’s policy concerning products purchased over the internet directly by consumers, as stated in our standard warranty documentation:
“No warranty is offered by Goodman on, any products ordered over the internet.”

1) According to Consumer Reports, Goodman gas furnaces have the highest percentage of repairs among 12 brands that they surveyed. No rating available on their A/C.
2) The question might be: Can you get parts that might be needed locally, if they aren't included. Every installation is different. No one could cover every needed part.
3) I'm not sure you'll find a local HVAC technician who will even charge a system they haven't installed. Unless you are licensed to handle freon, this isn't something you can legally do yourself.
A/C installation is not a good DIY thing, but the more you look and learn, the more you can watch over the HVAC pro that does the installation to make sure you're not being taken advantage of.

Are you a gambler?
Stop for a moment and think. Why would a manufacturer allow good HVAC equipment to be sold on the internet?
Then check your prices against a warranted system. If you want to take the risk, then roll the dice and take your chances. Low end/budget equipment will most likely yield low end results.
Good Luck!
You will probably need it!

First, do not buy HVAC equipment over the internet. Goodman does not offer any warranty for these products. Second, I would like to attempt to lay to rest the Goodman curse. A few years ago my salesman approached me about a "cheaper line" to add to my product list. It was Goodman. When I saw the price difference, I thought this has to be junk. So, I was curious and ordered a furnace. I was correct. It was not a well built machine. Not impressed, I told the salesman no thanks. He then reapproached me about a year ago and said you gotta look at the new Goodman. I said no thanks. He persisted so I again ordered a furnace. I was amazed. This is not the same company or product it was just 3 years ago. Goodman bought a longstanding, well known company and redesigned their products and as far as Im concerned, is in the top 3 in quality for price. You get what you pay for and the new Goodman costs quite a bit more than the old one but its worth it. Just get the warranty. Oh and by the way, did you hear about the tax credit next year for high efficiency furnaces? There are 21 furnace models that qualify for the 150 or 200 dollar credit. Goodman manufacturing makes 18 of those. Their new model high efficiency starts at a 95% rating on the standard unit.
