Somewhere right near the roof line. This is a masonry chimney. I can move the top 4’ section. I’d like to install a liner, and tear down the top to below the roof line, then build a new one out of wood and siding. Then eventually tear down the rest of the chimney inside the house. The chimney is about 2’ by 2’ straight down and bears on the basement floor. I think it actually supports a beam in the first floor. The only thing that the flue serves is a Burnham boiler (about 100,000 btu) and its possible I’d like to ad a gas water heater.

The only problem I can for see is the connection to the boiler, where the new liner would need to make a real sharp 90° bend to get out the 6” hole. I’m assuming the liner would be about 6”, and the existing flue isn’t much bigger than that. How do I make that bend inside the chimney, make the hole bigger?

My other question is, where I tear masonry chimney down and frame in with wood, does the liner now have to be rigid pipe, like B vent?
