Painting - Sherwin Williams paint question

I bought one of their "Color To Go" sample quarts to test a color. The color was perfect and that size wound up coating all of the surfaces where I wanted that paint. BUT, I just read on the "can" that it "must be topcoated." Is that just a scare tactic to get you to buy more? Is there something inherently incomplete with the sample that I absolutely HAVE to topcoat it or else (will it disappear in a week or something)?

I have never used one of their 'color to go' quarts. It may just be an inferior grade of paint in which case it just won't wear or wash as well as the good paint. I would think the main reason for stating that on the can would be so they don't have to warrant the product. It will be interesting to see if someone knows for sure. The paint won't disappear but probably isn't scrubable.

I'd wait. Even if the paint isn't as durable, the worst that could happen is that you buy a quart and paint later rather than now.

My understanding is the SW Color to Go product is only for sampling colors. It is similar to a primer, and is not intended to be used as a topcoat.

Depending on where you used it, it might be good enough, but don't plan on washing it.

Well, if I had any question at all I'd drop the 12 bucks now rather than worry about it and possibly have to do something more significant to it later.

Now that I've read all the posts after my original one, I think you should go buy a quart and paint.

heh! while you were checking, did you happen to notice the gallon price? i'll be buying a few this weekend.

I’m a small one-man operation and don’t get a high volume discount. These are a few of my contractor prices (approximate) per gallon for SW paint in the Philadelphia suburbs, excluding sales tax. Most paints can be purchased in 5-gallon cans for an additional savings. Sometimes, their sale prices are better than my contractor prices.

I finally got a reply from SW:

"These products are solely manufactured for the purpose of sampling a color
and are not formulated with any specific performance specifications. As
such, I would recommend coating over the sample.

Gosh, I never expected the company man to recommend top-coating (sarcasm)!

I guess I'll go spend the "twelve, thirteen, fourteen" bucks on a quart and eliminate any doubts. After all, I wouldn't want to go against Randy's advice...
