I'm going to grout the ceramic floor tile on my hearth with the same thinset I set them with. This O.K? I built up the hearth area with 4 layers of 1/2" cementboard on top of a wood floor. What's best to trowel over the exposed cut edges of the backer with, to finish the edge of the hearth - thinset, mortar, grout? Would a 1/16" spacer between floor & whatever I trowel the edge in with be a good idea, to prevent direct contact with the wood floor?..... Thanks!

Not a great idea to use thinset as grout, that's why they make grout, also, why on earth did you use that many layers of CBU, it does nothing for strength.:wall:
