I just rented a house that has a fireplace. Inside the fireplace is a pipe that is a gas connection. There is a fireplace grate, no logs. However, I can't find a gas valve in the room to turn on/off the gas.
I'd like to buy some gas logs while they are at the end of the season and being marked down. Any thoughts about where I might find a gas valve? There is nothing on the hearth, nor on the same walls as the fireplace.
Thanks.

budgetsgalore, Welcome to the DIY Forums.
Trace the gas line back to the right or left and where it disappears, look for a metal plate. The older ones had the valve under a plate so it did not get kicked and the kids didn't play with it. Good luck.

The pipe disappears into the brick. I don't see any kind of plate. Could it be outside the house? The house was built in the 50's or 60's.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Unless the gas line has been disconnected, I cannot believe the valve is not close to the fireplace. If it were away from it, you would have to turn on the gas and then VERY QUICKLY run to the fireplace to light it before too much gas filled the fireplace. Does the gas line have holes in the pipe to light it? Is there a cap on the end of the pipe? The valve may have been removed.

There appears to be a coupling on the pipe. It is not capped.

If the pipe in your fireplace is not capped and doesn't have holes along the length of it, then it is not a "log lighter." You probably have inherited the leftovers of some other kind of gas rig.
BUT REMEMBER THE GAS COMPANY! In California, at least, they will come out for free to inspect your gas pipe problems. They might at least help you trace the source. Maybe you can talk your landlord into an fix-up.
