I am installing a backsplash directly to wallboard using 4" tile and an adhesive made by TEC. I cut/fit around electrical boxes so the receptacles and switches (which were removed prior) could be installed flush with the tile finish. In open areas I applied the adhesive to the wall with a 3/16" trowel, but in smaller areas and around some of the electrical boxes I buttered the back of the tile and snugged them in.
What would cause a tile to crack when I reinstalled the devices? A void in adhesive on the tile back? Would it be better to spacers such as washers behind the devices?
All input appreciated.

Could be a void. I would just snug the screws up - don't overtighten.

If deco plates, you screwed the small screws at the top and bottom into the tile, cracking it, you either have to cut the tile so it leaves room for those screws or loosen up the outlet or switch slighty, then install the cover plates and have the plates pull the outlets or switches out tight.:)
