Lighting, Light Fixtures, Ceiling and Exhaust Fans - Under-Cabinet lighting options ?

Just bought a pre-owned house.

Previous owners had lights under the kitchen cabinets, but they are ugly, don't throw enough light, and each one of the lights has to be plugged in separately (these wires are an eye sore).

I want to install new lighting under the cabinets. Preferabley lighting that will be close to flush with the underside of the kitchen cabinets; Bright; And lights that can be hard wired to a switch, which I will have to install because the one switch in the kitchen operates the ceiling fan light.

Slimline halogen oe xenon. You will need to wire them into the kitchen lighting circuit. You cannot use the counter recepticles to power them.

You can connect to the existing light circuit with wiremold through your cabinets to the attic.
To switch them seperatly is a whole nuther ball game.
What type of backsplash do you have.

Xenon seems to be the way to go for lighting.

I used 'rope lights'. They are sold at home improvement warehouses. They resemble strings of white Christmas tree mini lights enclosed in clear plastic flexible tubing about 1/2 inch diameter. They run very cool, are inexpensive, and emit a soft, even light. Compare brands, get the strings advertised as 'bright'.

Attach them with open cup hooks you screw up into the underside of your cabinets, almost flush. Install as many lengths as you like for desired brightness, or run them back and forth. Install switched 120v receptacles and plug them in.

Compared to halogen or xenon, they are nowhere near as bright. But they are much cooler, much less glare, more even, and much cheaper. And easier to install. Buy a string and see if you like them.

I don't care for halogen lights, lot of power, lot of heat.. I have used rope lights and they work great, dimmable and all.... my newest is custom made flourescent tubing that fits under the cabinets out of sight.. they are bent to go around the corners and all... looks great, works great...
