I have a this machine for many years and all of a sudden only the heavy duty mode works. In regular and delicate it fills with water and will start to agitate then stop and not continue. Any thing I can do to get this bad boy going again?
Thanks

Go to the regular cycle and set the timer on
its final spin which is close to the very end of
the cycle then pull the knob to turn it on. When you
turn it on does it start spinning or is it dead?

I did as you said. I put it at the end of the spin cycle in the wash mode and it spun when I pushed the knob in. Then I put it at the end of the spin cycle in the rinse cycle. When I pushed the knob in it spun for a short time and then stopped. After a minute or so it spun again for a half minute or so then stopped. At which point I shut the machine off as it is getting late.

thanks

Was wondering if you have any ideas about the washer

Ok you say that the washer stops agitating. Does
it stop in the middle of its agitation cycle? Or does it
agitate ok until the end of the agitate cycle then stop and fail to drain and spin?

“When I pushed the knob in it spun for a short time and then stopped. After a minute or so it spun again for a half minute or so then stopped.”

When it did this was there water in the washer tub?

well I did as you suggested and went to the end of the spin first at wash cycle where the drum had just a touch of water and then at the end of the rinse cycle where there was no water. both times it started spinning for a few seconds then stopped for a minute or so then started then stopped repeatedly. It did drain out the water after the wash cycle.
Do you think it's an electrical or mechanical problem?

I’m leaning towards an electrical problem with this one.

The motor has three windings in it. The start winding, the high speed run winding and the low speed run winding. Normally when you start the washer the start and the run windings are energized together just long enough to get the motor running. Then the start winding is dropped out of circuit or turned off leaving only one of the motor windings energized. What could be happening is that more than one of these windings is staying turned on at the same time. This could be caused by two different things. The timer could be sending voltage to one of the other motor windings when its not suppose to. Or the motor start switch is bad and not turning off the motor start winding after its no longer needed. Either of these things can cause the motor to overheat and trip out on its overload protector.

By any chance does the motor seem to emit more humming noise than it used to?

The electrical explanation was very detailed but over my head. As far as humming more, the motor sound did seem to make a different noise befor it went awry. Still wondering if there is a fix in sight.

"Still wondering if there is a fix in sight."

All I can give you at this point are some possibilities. To do proper diagnostics you would need to know how to use a multimeter in order to determine whether the voltages to the motor are
correct. This is the only way to determine whether or not you have any electrical problems and
isolate the source of the trouble. Otherwise you could misdiagnose the problem and end up
buying parts you really dont need.

A few electrical possibilities are..
The timer
The motor start switch
The motor itself

Mechanical possibilities..
Bound Transmission
Bound pump
Bound Motor (berings)
