I have learned on this forum that 3 coats of mud is sufficent when floating sheetrock. My question is, does the tapeing process count as one coat, or is it 3 coats AFTER the tape has been applied and is dry? Also, is 3 coats just a rule of thumb, or can more be applied if needed?
Thanking you in advance for any help,

Hey Bob
3 coats of mud isn't a set rule but just what is normally needed - tape & bed followed by 2 coats. If the mud is applied in thinner coats it is apt to take an extra coat. You could apply it thicker but then you would need to do more sanding :( :wall: The number of coats of mud isn't that important - the finished product is.

It takes what it takes. Sometimes more and sometimes less. Believe me 6 coats on this ceiling was not excessive!!
