Anyone have experience with a SIM unit or the like? We have TIVO and can't record favorite movies to DVD for keeping (our box is the basic 40 hour box so we can't store more than a few!), so I'd like find a way around that....I'm not using it to distribute or anything illegal, just to record and keep for home viewing.
A buddy told me about the SIM and I did some research online, but would like to hear from someone who's actually used it and not depend on the claims they make. Thanks! :)

I am not sure what the "SIM" unit is, but depending on what you are trying to do, it may be considered illegal even for just home use and not resale. If you are only trying to copy movies from your TIVO to dvd, there should be no legality issues and you can try the Tivo to Go service (http://www.tivo.com/4.9.19.asp. To use that service you do need to have a series 2 Tivo and a networked home pc with a dvd burner. You could also get a new tivo with built in dvd recorder. Here is an example http://www.crutchfield.com/S-y5qSdVfrThu/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=116500&I=622DRT800
There are plenty of other models available. Your other choice would be to build a home theater pc. That would give you the greatest flexibility and upgradability, but also the most difficult to setup.

I don't know what you are going to "keep" but if it is rentals, that is definately illegal. If there is a title you want long term, go out and buy it.
If you want to copy DVDs you own to the TiVo for the convenince of viewing you can do that. You can also upgrade the HDD in the TiVo.
