I am building a cabinet from oak that I want to stain to match the rest of my living room furniture, which is mahogany. The color I am after is a very deep, rich brown with reddish tint. I have been experimenting with minwax oil based ebony, dark walnut, jacobean and red mahogany in all combinations. No matter what I do I cannot get the wood even close to dark enough. I am putting on a generous amount, leaving it on for 20-30 minutes before wiping off, and applying 2-3 coats but it is still not dark enough. Is there anything else I can try? I have been reading about dyes - does anyone know about them? Can I achieve a darker color with them?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I built this to my own specs, spent a lot of money on wood and tools and am really happy with the result and now I am going crazy because I can't stain it the right color! Thanks everyone.

I don't know about dyes but hopefully someone that does will reply.
What I usually do when stain alone doesn't do the job is to stain as close as I can and then tint the varnish/poly to finish coloring the wood. Minwax polyshades is a pretinted poly.
