We are about to repaint our home exterior and I am ready to start caulking around the windows (aluminum to brick & wood sofit), doors (wood to brick), etc. My question is, with so many brands/types of caulk on the market with a very wide price margin, how do I choose the right caulk? Can one brand/type be used on everything or do I need different types for what I've mentioned? I've always heard that DAP was a good brand but wanted to check with you guys to see if anyone had a preference that will do the job without overpaying for a name. Any advice or guidance would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks, Joe in Texas.

The Washington Post do-it-yourself guy (Mike McClintock, I believe) answered this question a few years ago and I took notes. He recommended POLYSEAMSEAL all purpose(not the silicon type). I have been using this for a couple of years and I like it very much. It costs more than DAP which I think the writer didn't like. I liked it enough to give away all of my old DAP caulk to less picky people. It dries for painting in 2 hours.

The polyurathane based caulks are supposed to be really good but can be hard to find. I'm not overly fond of DAP caulking, I do however have a lot of confidence in the 'white lightning' brand of caulk and use their 40 yr siliconized acrylic latex caulk almost exclusively. I wouldn't recomend using any latex caulk that isn't siliconized or acrylic.
