I'm renovating my kitchen and have removed the old plaster ceiling that covered what appears to be white oak beams. There are some small sections with plaster residue but otherwise the beams are just dirty. What would you all recommend to clean them before staining. Also, any suggestions as to what to use for stain and/or protectant would be wecome. Thanks

I would sand them and then wipe them down with a thinner rag. While they are still wet with the thinner it will give you a good idea as to what they will look like with poly/varnish. Hopefully that will give you an idea as to how you wish to finish them - it will also alert you to any areas that might need further attention.
