I messed up: was patching some dings in the walls at the office. Had the spackle smoothed and was applying primer when I got distracted by people coming in and the phone ringing. The primer ended up way too thick in one spot, but I thought the paint might cover it. Of course, it didn't. I have sanded the spot down, but now I'm not sure what to do next. The spot is nearly smooth as glass and I'm wondering whether I should prime and paint, or just paint? I did not sand through to the spackle, so I was leaning toward just paint, but I'm getting a little tired of this wall and want this time to be the last time I have to deal with it.

all spackled & patched areas need primer or else the paint will dry differently on those areas.

Sorry, I apparently wasn't clear: spackled, sanded, primed and painted, but the primer was too thick and the finished paint job was awful. Have now sanded smooth without getting down to the spackle. Do I still need to prime this first for adhesion of the paint because the wall is now nearly smooth as glass?

if the paint will be touching only primer and not spackle, you're fine.
