I have Oil Hot water heating which costs me $400 a month for heat and hot water from September to May. We own an 1400sq. foot bi-level in Eastern canada, which can be cold.

I want to replace this oil furnace with something cheaper but dont know which route to go. I have 3 scenarios.

1. New Wood Stove in the basement ($4521 installed) Wood costs 160-200 per cord. My existing Oil Furnace (25 years old) remains as a back-up should the wood fire go out.
2. Oil/Wood Combination ($6273) Replaces old Oil Furnace/Boiler
3. Fireplace insert in our upper level fireplace ($3205) Existing Furnace as back up???

Help me please, every time I call a company they try to steer me in the direction of their product of course!
