I want to buy an area rug that includes a conversation grouping of sofa, two chairs and coffee table. Is there a general rule of thumb for size?

taken from a previous thread:

A rule of thumb for defining a sitting area, is there should be no more than two feet of empty rug extending out from behind the furniture if furniture is placed on rug. If furniture is placed around a rug, then it should be large enough to accommodate at least the front legs of each piece of furniture.

so basically, arrange your furniture how you want it & then measure the space you need covered by the rug. the smallest that would work will probably be around 5x7, up to 8x10 or maybe even 11x14 if you want the furniture all on top of it.
