We are in the process of remodeling an upstairs bath. We shut off the water to the tub, sink, and toilet and have removed all three from the bathroom. Since we have done that, water seems to be bubbling up into other drains in the house when the dishwasher or washing machine are used. It is just a coindicidence that this happened when we removed the upstairs bath fixtures or did that have some sort of affect on the plumbing? Water did not back up until the tub, sink, and toilet were taken out.

Thanks!

dhouser, Welcome to the DIY Forums.
I am guessing that the toilet upstairs used the main drainline for a drain and vent. Meaning that the pipe drained water downwards and also went upwards and out the roof. The only reason I can think of that this would have changed anything with other fixtures is if you blocked the piping going up through the roof. Drain lines need air to work properly. The air is obtained through the vent. If the vent is clogged or blocked some way, the drainage system will not work properly throughout the house. Did you possibly plug one of the drains upstairs with a rag that could have fallen into the main drain? You should have something blocking the drainlines if you removed the traps on the sink and tub. Otherwise, you will get sewer gas coming into the house. Same is true with the toilet pipe as it does not have a trap. (toilets have built in traps so no other trap is used in the piping). Good luck and let us know if you find a cause or want to add more information.
