my interior walls on 3 sides that butt against chimney are being stained red by water slowly trickleing down the bricks. When I go into th attick I can see the stains from water running down the bricks and it looks wet on 3 sides around where the chimney meets the roof inside the attick.

The attick is not heated and has screened vents on oppisite walls and there is frost on the attick ceiling (unsderside of roof).

With water coming down the bricks like thati si t more likely a seal problem around chimney base on roof or could it be shingle problem? The chimney is where the roof sides meet. its a few feet on one side. I did put some of that black tar like stuff on some flashing I saw sticking up last fall as there was a leak into our dining room. Quite a few of the bricks have been falling off or chipped so I do need some brick repai but I would like to get the water problem solved before spring comes and we start getting rain.

The house in question is in minnesota so it's pretty cold out here still. I suspect I might have to wait until it warms up but if there is a fix I can do now as atemporary fix I would appreciate the advice. Any advice on this is greatluy appreciated.

Thanx
