I replaced my toilet last year following a new tile floor job. I guess I didnt do a proper job on the install because now there seems to be a leak around it. I noticed the grout around the toilet was damp but it 12 inches from the toilet so I just thought my wife had spilled water or maybe stood there after a shower and got the floor wet. I know now the toilet is the culprit. I have removed it and found the area surrounding wet, but not soaking (maybe damp is a better word). I tried to take a look from under the house but unfortunately this is the one area that I cannot access. The area around the toilet seems stable and the tiles are still firmly attached to the floor via cementboard and thinset. I set up a fan to dry the area. I am not sure where I went wrong. Should the drain in the floor have been raised .5 inch or so to accomodate the new floor (cementboard, thinset and tile)? Or did I install the wax ring wrong? Not sure what to do next??? Thanks in advance

Since you recently installed the tile, did you install an extension ring on the toilet flange? If not, it could be your culprit, as the flange is now sitting below the tile and not allowing the wax ring to seal properly. Obtain an extension ring from the hardware, install it and an new wax ring with a bell, and see it that doesn't solve the problem.

What was the condition of the wax ring when you pulled the toilet? Here's where you can find a thicker wax ring.
