My wife and I want to install ceramic tile on our fireplace and hearth. Right now there is 1 inch thick marble there. 3 pieces making up the surround and 1 piece for the hearth.
Is it possible to tile over a vertical smooth marble surface?

Thanks.

Yes, but what about the raw tile edges of the new tiles, what will you do with those?:)

I am relieved to hear I can tile over the marble fireplace surrround. We are going to use bull nosed corner tiles around the fireplace opening, and the mantels legs will cover the cut edges of the tiles around the outside.
I figure I will have to roughen up the smooth marble, to give the mortar something to grip onto.
Any suggestions on what to use?

Thank You.

Any rough grit paper and then use a good modified thinset.:)
