I am having a house built. The builders will be installing a Goodman combination AC/Heat Pump unit and will be installing it in the attic. I have heard from different people that I must have a return air vent in each room of the house for the Heat Pump to work properly. However, I cannot find any data to support this advice. I do not want to make problems for the builder but I do not want to have the system installed incorrectly either. What is the correct installation for a unit of this type?

You should have returns in the bedrooms. None in the kitchen or bath. Typically, in the hall and living and dining rooms. Generally, the air supplied to a room needs an unobstructed path back to the air handler. No doors or other obstacles should be in the path.

I prefer individual returns for each room(other than bath/kitchen) rather than central return(s) for good air flow exhange. But if you only have central return(s), they should be strategically located for best air flow and sized correctly to be in balance with your supplies. With a new home, you have a golden opportunity to get this right or have a major screw-up if your duct design/sizing is done by a hack. And I have to admit a bias against Goodman products that are sold more on price than quality. I just hope that your installing dealer is superior to the HVAC equipment. My advice is to discuss this in detail with your contractor.
My Opinion.
