I have an antique cedar chest that I am going to refinish and want some advice.

I have pictures here (301KB)- http://www.joevb.us/images/cedarchest.zip

We started to sand the paint off and are now getting back to it. What I want to know is what will be the best way to seal this? I am not sure I want to stain it or change its color (I know I am not going to paint it). Maybe just a light stain to bring out the grain.

How would you finish this to make it look really nice? Any other advice is welcomed...thanks.

Joe

You need to get ALL the paint off if you plan on staining it. You might want to get a stripper(the Dads brand works well) to help. After a few rounds w/that and lots of sandings, I would wipe it down with denature alcohol and probably put a wood conditioner on it(someone with some more experience might disagree with me there). Stain it, urethane it, and you are ready to go. Or, you might go with a watco type product(tung oil ect.), it would give it more of an aged look.

Finish your stripping first. Painted wood that has been stripped doesn't always stain well. When you are done stripping, wipe the wood down with a wet thinner rag - this will give you an idea of what it will look like when varnished. If you just want to add a little color using minwax polyshades might be a good option.
