"Methylated spirits" will probably stain slate and I assume this is your problem, right?
Methylated spirits is also known as denatured alchohol. I would use either to go back and rehydrate the stain then immediately try to neutralize it with warm soapy water by scrubbing it with a soft scrub brush.
Rehydrate, scrub with warm soapy water to neautralize, then use warm clean water to further neutralize and remove any residue. Repeat the clean water application a few times.
That's my guess.:)
