My front entry door, and frame have been painted multiple times over 40 years and I would like to stain and poly instead. I realize it will not look the same as raw wood, but I'd like to know if the results will be worthwhile. I realize it's a lot of work but I'd rather keep the existing than replace the entry way altogether. No need to give details on how (unless you want to) I've seen other threads that go into the details so no need to reproduce here. Just wanted some opinions on whether it will look good. Thanks.

Not an easy task. Plan on stripping followed by a LOT of sanding. Hard to say how good the outcome will be. I've seen old doors that stripped and restained well, others that were best repainted.

Got to go along with Mark - you won't know how good it will look until you actually do it. It may be fantastic, and it might just send you to the nearest paint store to cover it up before someone else sees it...
