Does anyone know what the structural requirements are for a cast iron clawfoot tub on the 2nd floor? The tub weighs approx. 300lbs.dry. With water I estimate a weight of approx. 700lbs. What type of support should their be? We currently have 2x10's on 16" center that are mounted on hangars. Thanks for any help.

It would take a structural engineer to verify the live load capacity of the floor; perhaps you'd have some luck with a google for it. The span of the 2" x 10"s would be decisive. But I can tell you that I see clawfoot tubs installed all the time on 2" x 10" @ 16" OC joists (spanning < 12') w/ 3/4" ply subfloor and I've never seen one fall through. If you're correct about the 700 lbs, that's four spots - the size of a quarter - with 175 lbs each on them.

Thanks for the reply steve_gro. Yes, I spoke with a patient who is an architect/engineer, and she said the exact same thing. I do have 2x10's 16" on center. The span is approx. 12' plus. But the good news is that the tub will be in a corner of the room sitting directly over two of the joists, only inches away from the wall. These two joists sit on top of the wall not in hangars, which should be much stronger. So, she's going up soon! I'll keep you posted on what happens.
