I have some old chairs which I believe have an old shellac coating on them. (I am able to remove the finish with denatured alcohol and a bit of rubbing.) My question is: is it possible to urethane them after I have removed most of the finish the the alcohol or a 50-50 solution of denatured alcohol and lacquer thinner? I'd like to use them with the oak table that I am doing.
Thank you

More than likely. I don't recall ever having gone over shellac with poly but I have used varnish over shellac with no problems. The times I have coated shellac with varnish the shellac finish was old and worn and a light sanding was bascily all the prep given.

I don't think you'd have a problem, but I'd use a sanding sealer first(specifically SealCoat) just to make sure it would work.
