Lots of depends here...

What size is your home?

What is your family's comfort level?

How do you rate home's insulation properties?

What size and age is your current system?

Are there indications that your home's inside thermostat setting can not be maintained even with aux heat on those colder mornings/days? Keep in mind this winter heating season has been very mild in the SE and I expect this to be true also for Charleston.

Have you had a load calculation performed?

Need a little more info....

Hey I live in Charleston too :D

5kw is pretty small, how big is your home and does it have 1 or 2 Air Conditioners.

tracy I'm in Fl and I have a 5kw heat strip, it is way too small
when the outside temp dips to the 40's and 30's the heat pump and strip cannot
keep up. so the system runs much longer than it should.
