I am a big DIY reader and love learning about home projects. I decided to have my bathroom redone and, after reading about tile installation, decided to leave it up to the professionals. I hired a licensed, insured, big name company to do the bathroom. I noticed that they installed my bathroom floor porcein tiles over the old (1979) linoleum. I read that this is a big no-no.What should I do now that they have installed it. Do I have them tear out the work and replace it, do I not pay them? I don't know the proper way to handle this situation, as I am a young lady and I am pretty sure they really don't like hearing what I have to say about this issue (it's sad but true). I don't want to get screwed by these guys. Please help!

On the first page of this forum is an offering from David Taylor a professional in the tile business that has plenty of good information to offer. Everything you need to know about installing tile over vinyl is in his comments.

Your installer has probably offered you a ONE YEAR WARRANTY on the installation but in truth most tile installations will last a year before problems begin to crop up with faulty installations. Maybe you should insist this tile installation company either give you a FIFTEEN YEAR WRITTEN WARRANTY or redo the floor right now. Keep in mind that the vinyl they covered has a 99% chance of containing asbestos, they would know that and that may be their reason for covering it instead of taking it out. There are however asbestos abatement methods that allow the safe removal of the vinyl.
If you have floor-type heat registers you may be able to determine in advance if there is a 1/4" underlayment under the vinyl and that is where a big problem would lie.

Umm he is not a pro. I would never do that in any case. I agree written warranty for 15 years or I will have someone else remove it and replace it and you can cover the cost. (They have already proven they don't do quality work) I hate to say it but it sounds like the single women contractor cutting corners syndrome. Sad but some of my so called piers do it. I provide the same service and quality to everyone whether you understand what I am doing or not. I and others rely pretty heavily on past customer referrals.
