Okay I am in the process of seriously distressing some cabinets and furniture. Believe it or not I want chipping and peeling but i want a way to keep it like that after Im through distressing them. Should I do a couple of coats of poly over my distress? Its not going to be a smooth finish when done, will that effect the poly application? will the poly make it have the look but smooth to the touch, I guess kind of like the real venetian plaster where when finished its smooth..or should I try another sealant?

if the sub surface if chipped, peeled and distressed, the top surface will only mirror the sub surface.
you can sand your final distressed look with 220 to "even" up the surface somewhat.
still it will not be as smooth as if you had not distressed the sub surface.
apply the poly and call it good.
