I'm refinishing the three doors for our laundry room cupboards. Like all other woodwork in our house, the previous owners used a dark brown (almost black) stain, and much of the woodwork is gouged and scratched, so I'm sanding, filling, priming and painting it all. The doors are particle board with wood laminate on the outside, with a "decorative" design routed on the front (http://home.comcast.net/~mattoberle/temp/door.jpg). Ugly centered door handles are going.

I've painted the cupboards a dark cream color (http://home.comcast.net/~mattoberle/temp/cupboards.jpg), and will be doing the same to the doors.

My question is this: How can I cover the routed design on the front of the doors with something I can paint the room's accent color?

I'm thinking about using 1/8" thick masonite fake wainscoting, cut in a rectangle just big enough to cover the design, leaving about a 2" strip of original door around the edges. My initial thought was to rout a 1/8" deep rectangular depression into the doors, and recess the wainscoting inside. However I'm not sure this is do-able, and one wrong move with my router and I've just ruined a door. What about simply gluing the wainscoting on top the door front?

I'm open to other ideas too.

Why not paint the routed groove your accent color? That would be the easiest IMO. If you add wainscotting use both glue and brad nails.

Thanks marksr, I'll give that a try.
