I'm putting a 1/2" plywood subfloor down where the carpet used to be in order to bring it up to the level of the vinyl before we have our Mohawk laminate installed. I've left gaps between the panels for expansion. How big of a gap is too big though? Some of the gaps ended up being 1/2" or so. Is that too much? Do the gaps need to be filled?
Aslo, how much difference in height can the plywood be to the existing vinyl? The plywood is about 1/16" or so higher than the vinyl. Obviously thats not much but I just wanted to be sure.
Thanks in advance!

An 1/8" gap is what you want. It's the "1/2 or so" part that concerns me. You could rip a 3/8" sliver of plywood and glue that in flush with the top, just don't completely fill the whole gap. Use layers of 15# or 30# asphalt roofing felt to start flush and then feather out onto the vinyl.
