Is this a major wiring effort that a contractor needs to do or can a homeowner do the installation on their own. I am attempting to control the heat pump operation during cold weather when it gets below freezing and this seems to be a logical approach.

Are you putting a new t-stat that has remote sensor?

yes, a home owner can do this if they are good at fishing wires.
