We have a 27 inch TV that has a big black square that appears at various times on different channels. It blocks out 3/4s of the screen. Does anyone have a diagnosis for the cause of this? It has done it since it was two months old.

It sounds like the closed captioning box. Check and make sure your closed captioning is turned off. Also make sure it is not set to text1 or text2. I have seen that numerous times. It won't display anything but a huge black box.
