I painted an entire 5 piece bedroom set with a semi-gloss latex paint over a pecan finish wood. I prepared pieces by washing well with water and ammonia. let dry 5 days. put on 5 thin coats with full day or more drying in between coats. Now, as I try to do anything with the furniture, it is chipping like crazy. HELP.

was there a finish on the wood to begin with? or was it bare, unfinished wood?
no primer???
no primer???

I assume that the problem is caused by not using a solvent based primer. Whenever anything that was previously coated with varnish/poly, sanding, cleaning and priming is necesarry for the paint to bond. It is quite likely that it will continue to chip.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the pieces will likely need to to be stripped and redone to stop the chipping. Wish I had an easier answer for you.

Based on the two replies, it looks like I am doomed. It was finished wood, probably with a polyurethane. No, I didn't use a primer. AAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGH. Maybe I'll go for shabby chic. BY THE WAY -- THANKS.
