I read some posts that said in the north my humidifier s/b no more than 35%....however, our house is VERY dry and VERY loose---When I adjusted the humistat upward from 35%, I heard a clicking....Does this mean that it clicked on? I have it now set at 40% to see if it will make a diff....Is this ok?

Yes, the click is the valve opening up to let the water on to the pad.
I set ours about 40%, and I am in Minnesota.. You have to watch your windows, if they start dripping, then it's too much humidity.

I'll watch the windows,.,., At this point we're not even sure if the humidifier is working.....Is there any way to tell? I'm trying to figure this out on my own and have no experience!

What model humidifer do you have?
Drum or flow-though?
Flow though you should see water trickle down the drain hose.
Water valve turned on from the main water pipe?
