The previous owner of our house did something horrid to the 1/2 bath downstairs. It looks like she put joint compound mixed with sand and applied it to the drywall with a huge stiff brush. I'll bet I'm not too far off on her application process. Then she painted it 3 different colors (not to mention the leapard print border). The joint compound is so thick I don't think it's possible to smooth it out and the texture makes the bathroom feel cramped - not to meniton it's flat out ugly. I have no idea how to remedy the situation. It's so awful. Any ideas?

i moved your question from Wallpapering to this area, because it sounds like you probably need to just scrape/sand that stuff down.

tear it down!!! its probably easier to install new drywall but it can be done with a nice stiff strong wall scraper.
