OK, I have this fixure over my sink: http://www.joevb.us/DSCN2663.JPG

It is a light fixture, the blue box doesn't have enough drywall to hold on to and dowsn't mount properly (only one side is attached). So when I put everything back together you see the edges of where the drywall is missing.

What I need to know is, what is the best way to fix this so the blue box will have enough to grab on to and mount properly so I can then replace the fixture with something that will look nicer?

Thanks

Joe

How is the box mounted? It appears to be mounted too high. The face of the box should be almost level with the ceiling. Is it the type of box that has 2 little ears [wings] that spread out as it is tighten up? It will be hard to get that type of box to work in a wallowed out hole as the ears have to have solid drywall to mount to. Maybe some wood could be screwwed to the adjacent rock giving the ears a place to hold.

If it is a conventional type box - mounts to wood or metal, all you need to do is add joint compound around the edges and texture. An oversized base plate would be benificial.

If the fixture MUST be mounted in that location again and if I were doing it, I would replace a section of drywall about a foot square and use one of those blue "old work" boxes from the box stores. I would first cut the hole for the fixture mount, then install the patch using some 1x2 slats for reinforcement, tape-mud-paint, then install the mount and the new light. In any event, looks like you're gonna have to patch the hole. :thumbdn:
