First off, I had a heat/cool load calculation done on my house. My existing heat pump and air handler are sized correctly for the amount of sq ft I have now, 2.5 ton. I am planning on adding a room addition (building myself) sometime next year. Based on the calculations accomodating for the additional space, the size of the system falls midway between 2.5 and 3 ton. I've been told to go ahead and up the size to a 3 ton to accomodate for the increased area.
I've got several apples to apples bids on replacing my old heat pump system. Ouch!! The estimates range from $6800 to $8800 for the following; 3 ton, 15 seer, 2speed hp condenser. 36k btu air handler w/filter base, 10 kw heat strip, new electrical wires, new lines ran back through existing sleeves in concrete slab floor, and a programable thermostat.
I consider myself to be pretty well versed when it comes fixing, building, and or replacing stuff. From the looks of some pricing for a "Goodman" system, I could save a big chunk of change doing the majority of the work myself. I understand I wll need to meet code and pass inspection. And, I am not allowed to do the final hookup. What are some opinions about the "DIY" idea?? Opinions on "Goodman"?? Don't worry about hurting my feelings!
Thank you,
Chuck

First of all, get several more quotes and keep in mind you don't have to purchase a 2 stage HP condenser or a var speed blower although I like both features.
I do not like Goodman because I consider it low end/budget equipment sold more on price than quality. But if this is type of equipment you decide on, make certain you check on the qualifications of the dealer/installer.
While I know they can be somewhat expensive, I believe Trane/Am Std make the best heat pumps. Usually they will offer rebates in spring/fall.
As far as refrigerants go, I don't care but make certain you don't pay more for R410 (Puron) systems over R22 systems. Not worth it! Also, find out the rated SEER and HSPF for the size units that are quoted. And please have a dealer inpect your ductwork system-both supply and return for overall condition, size, insulation properties, etc. Get a thorough understanding of warranty-what it covers and what it does not cover.
I don't believe this is a DIY project unless you have good HVAC and electrical qualifications/experience.
My Opinion.

Also, on top of that. if you DIY this, you most likely don't the tools do this.
And if you get a Goodman off the intnernet, Warranity is GONE!
I am no longer in the field, and I had a new system put in 1 1/2 years ago, and I had the company do it. I could of done it myself, but I didn't want to lose the warranity, and support from Trane.
Having it done the Pro is worth every penny!

the numbers you posted are for a carrier infinity i think there is a $600 rebate on that system, it is R410a puron unit also has a 10yr parts and labor warranty thats there top of the line system. I would get a quote on a trane r22 system you may save a little money. I would stick with carrier or trane if you have the money.

Thanks guys for your input. I think I'll get a few more bids on a less bells & whistles system. Ya'll are pro Trane, any reccomendations on a certian system or model?

If you are going for heat pump, Look at the Trane variable speed air handler with electric strip back up, outdoor unit, XL14i for single stage or XL16i for two stage. or if budget allows XL19i two stage.
A good stat would be the Honeywell Vision Pro. Trane does have the same stat, but you are paying for the Trane name.
