I'm very dissatisfied with the HD DVR I rent from my cable provider, and want to get my own. I was told at the local electronics store that HD DVRs can only record broadcast HD, not the cable HD. Can this be true?
I'm not adverse to switching to satellite if need be. I just don't want to be stuck with their DVR to record HD. I've seen many DVRs on the market that have features I want, such as: program guide via home network, play media from another computer on home network, and built-in DVD burner. These aren't hard to find, but add HD, and I come up blank.
I don't need a recommendation, just a list of manufacturers. Any home entertainment experts out there who can help?

Cox;Explorer 8000HD.
Box need to be rebooted frequently; interface is ugly, crude and slow; many recordings missed due to box freeze; program guide is poor and practically unsearchable; slow remote response.

You could have a bad box or low signal quality. Personally I 'd go with satellite, the guide is slick and quick, you can record everything and all the channels are crystal. However, you may need an off-air antenna to receive local HD channels depending on where you live.

The issue with cable and HD, is that anything that tunes digital cable needs a cablecard.
Sony has a DVR that works with HD cable with Cablecard.
Later this year TiVo is supposed to releast their cablecard HD cable/antenna TiVo

But the problem with that is that I know of only one cable company that has a working cable card and that is in Florida. Time Warner pulled thiers last year.

Google "Explorer 8000HD" and you'll see the common problems. The poor interface is the main gripe. And when the drive nears capacity (as it easily can with HD recording), it can miss a scheduled recording. I plan to take it in and exchange it for the 8300HD, which I hope will solve that particular problem.
Sony's CableCard DVR doesn't burn DVDs or connect to a home network. TiVo's Humax DRT800 can burn DVDs and connects to a home network but can't record HD from cable.
I'm waiting for the new CableCard TiVo to be released later this year, but can't find its features or cost.
