I know I'm jumping the gun here since I'm not sure if my system is fixable or not..

but whats a good thermostat for a 1 stage cool 2 stage heat system..
I would love one that has auto changeover so my lazy but doesn't have to switch it between heat and cool oh and a back light is a must so I don't' have to turn the hall light on in the middle of the night..

I have a hunter model now thats huge 7-1/2 x 3-3/4 and sticks out 2 inches from the wall..
I only got it because back when I first got the house it all I could find at the local home centers for a two stage heat pump, Now I know better..
it does not have to be programmable by the way...

I'd suggest the Honeywell Vision Pro TH8320. It has everything that you mention that you wanted.

You can buy the basic Vision at Home Depot, but it's not as nice as the Pro line.. You may be able to get this on E-bay, but you won't get the support or warranity if you don't get it from an HVAC dealer.

i agree with jay, wish my property would allow me to replace all my units with even the base version(cheap ba#@%@*). do you have a cc dicksons or fergusons nearby? they may be able to help you out.
let us know how the project is going.

barry.. man are you the only person here, it seems that way..

I ordered a new circuit board and sensor today from sears.
the board said defrost control and the sensor was the defrost sensor..
I also ordered the manual for the unit..

once they arrive and I install them I will let you guys know whats going on..

by the way I took the outside unit apart today, the circuit board look questionable.. Some of the covering on the traces were pealing and the IC's had gunk all over it.. the sensor looked like aged plastic that was out in the sun too long
in the botton of the unit was 3-4 inches of dirt..
put it back together and it worked fine for about 2 hours then the sun went down and it started again..
