Help! I am using the sticky tape with holes in it. I applied enough mud to insure the tape was covered, and then after it dried went over it with a 6" knife. Next I used a 10" knife, but now I am able to see and feel where it is uneven. I am going to use a 12" knife next, but I guess my question is can I apply too much mud?? I'm trying to put the mud on as thin as possible.
Any help will be appreciated.

You can put too much mud on, but if you're able to feel the texture of the tape, I doubt that's the case. Several thin coats works better than laying it on thick.

Be sure to mix your mud well - it will apply easier. Most like to thin the mud a little for ease of application.

Are you putting the mud directly over the tape each time? If you are, stop. You want to put the mud on either side of the tape.

Coops28, Could you explain that please. I though I had to continue to cover the seams, by applying 3 or 4 layers of mud, and sanding between coats..
Thanks to all for your replys.

It sounded to me like you were just putting the mud directly over the tape with bigger knives. You need to build up mud all around the tape while covering it. I usually do it in 3 coats. First coat with a ten inch knife. put one corner of my knife in the middle of the tape and pull the length. So you have ten inches of mud on one side. Same on the other side. let that dry. Then I come back with a twelve the same way. Then I sand and put a top coat on.
