I'm finishing my basement and have applied the tape coat.My question is do I need to sand after the first coat?
Any suggestions?

Only if you made a huge mess - I have been known to have to sand after the first coat, but pros don't.

The only reason to sand the first coat would be to knock down any ridges that would affect the next coat. Sometimes they can be scraped with your broad knife. I usually only sand the last coat [unless I mess up :wall: ]

"ditto the others", but if you do sand, be careful that you don't sand the tape too much - it can become a real mess if you are not careful.

I have recently done what you are about to. Sanding is one of the worst jobs I have done. Like a previous reply proper mudding will greatly reduce the sanding. Something I didn't get good at until well into the job. Another thing, proper mixing of the compound will help to reduce the air bubbles in the mix and thuis give you a better finish.
