I plan on buying this armoire which has a southwestern finish to it. I dont think there is any stain on it now. Can I stain this with say a walnut color stain? I am real new to painting and would like some guidance. Thanks.

 hmmm........
Hi! i'm confused!
first you say it has a southwestern finish to it, but then you say there's no stain currently on it.........so what's on it??
then you ask if you can stain it with walnut stain, but then say you're new to painting!!
so first, before anyone can help you, clarify what, if anything, is on the wood now, and if you're wanting to paint it or stain it! :) !

I often refer to stain or varnish as paint since it is all related so I understand that part. Stain really needs raw [unfinished] wood to work well. Any wax or oil on the wood will prevent stain [or any other finish] from working well.
I'm not familiar with what a southwest finish is but assume it is some type of finish so it would need to be removed before staining.
Since you have yet to purchase the armoire you should talk with the sales people about your plans. They should know best [or can find out] if you can do what you want. It may be possible to purchase it unfinished or even in a walnut color.
