You will be hard pressed to "waterproof" MDF. In my opinion it is not the best surface for a work bench. Of course I use and abuse mine, so it has to be tough. If you have water issues with your work bench top, you may want to consider installing pt plywood and banding it with 1x2 lumber to dress it up. To make the best use of MDF, prime all surfaces and paint with a good quality paint. Others will chime in who paint for a living and will be more specific in paint types, etc. Good Luck with it.

We used MDF with a high gloss (that appeared to be) waterproof finish. The way we achieved it was that we used automotive bondo on all surfaces and sanded it smoth. Pay careful attention to the rough edges. Then paint the entire board with automotive paint much like you were painting a car. This had a very hard and what appearred to be perfectly sealed finish.
Good luck!

Almost sounds too pretty to use!

It almost was. Our application was for a cabinet front. The automotive paint made it hard and shiny just like a brand new black car.
Also, you could use the MDF under a sheet of laminate. That is 100% water-proof except at the seal.
