I cut the cable line today and tried to repair it. Took off the covering, left about 3'8 of an inch of the core exposed, twisted the mesh around the white covering, then using appropriate connections, I connected the 2 strands. Nothing, what did I do wrong?

Cable TV not just wires you twist together. You need to put a proper F connector on each end, and use a barrel coupler to join the two.

Call the cable guy, trying to fix it yourself may cause more problems than you can imagine.
