I want to expand and remodel the tiny kitchen in our 1913 house. Wall space for cabinets is very limited in this kitchen. We have a chimney that runs from the basement up through a corner in the kitchen and then out the roof of the kitchen. It would be great if we could get rid of the chimney and free up corner wall space for kitchen cabinets and counter. The chimneys location on the first floor roof also gets in the way of our future ability to expand a tiny second floor we have that doesn't even fully cover the first floor. So, here's the question: Can I remove the chimney and divert the flue for the furnace out the side of the house? Does anyone have any idea at all what the cost of doing this would be? Who would I call to do this work? Thanks.

I think you might want to post this question in the plumbing section under furnaces. That's the real issue. If you can divert your furnace it's going to be an all-metal duct set up. At that point your old chimney is nothing but a demolition job.

Good luck!
