Need to get a window A/C unit to go down to 50 deg or less. I've heard they're some mods that can be done (hopefully cheaper than buying a refrigeration unit or cold pack). Any experts have a plan to make this happen?

I would not advise of doing that.
You could do it, but then you may run into freezing problems. Window A/C does not have defrost cycles.
Be best to get the right equipement to do the job. Not "Make-Do". It may cost more money in the long run.
