My house was built in the 20's and we're about to begin remodelling the small kitchen. It was "updated" in the mid-60's. :)
The top levels of flooring are a linoleum sheet that is peeling up and then 9 x 9" tile (asbestos.) The tile is adhered to some sort of burlap-like mesh with maybe another layer of vinyl in between(not sure - it has red and black lines on it.)
All of these layers peel up VERY easily with very little cracking of the tile, but it did leave a little black dust.
What we found underneath was what I'd hoped - hardwood floors that match the rest of our house. But its covered in a black adhesive, the presumed source of this dust. Can that be removed safely?
I've since read about the dangers of asbestos and am concerned about if I should continue or I've likely done any damage already. Also, would it be safe to have the floors refinished?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
