It is durable, bythe nature of its composite. Cutting it will sometimes shatter it, and using a pneumatic nailer will definitely shatter it. I use it in bathrooms where there is a considerable amount of moisture, but I steer clear of it generally. I opt for MDF (medium density fiberboard) molding on everything except basement floor moldings (it will mold with moisture). It is easy to cut, comes primed, and nails great.

You can get crown and just about any other moulding in MDF. If you choose MDF crown plan on mitering your inside corners. Coping MDF is difficult since the thin edges chip easily. Some glue on those inside miters will help keep the corners together.

Like Jan2 said, MDF is not happy when it is coped. Once you have the corners cut, glued and nailed, run a bead of caulk in the corner and follow it with a wet sponge to remove the excess. You will be surprised just how good you really are.
