Can someone give me a quick step by step on laying carpet on stairs. Will just be removing old carpet and pad, and replacing. Tack strips are down. I have installed carpet in normal room but never on stairs. Do you still stretch stair carpet, and if so how? Do you cut width of stairs?

Stair tool, rubber mallet, carpet razor knife, and a knee kicker.

Cut to width and keep it as long as you can, so you can do more then one step at a time, unless all you have is waste from walls and cut-outs, to work with.

Start at the bottom and work your way up. set at the bottom riser, on tackstrips and knee kick stretch the tread back to the next riser. Stair tool into the crotch, hitting it with a rubber mallet. rub onto the tackstrips with the stair tool to set them good, then stretch the sides. go to the next one up and repeat.
